Our farm

The Vineyards

The Vineyards
The winery and the vineyards are located about 500 meters above sea level, on the hill of Marano di Valpolicella, considered one of the most suitable "crus" in Valpolicella for the production of great reds.
Nicola has developed and transformed the winery and surrounding vineyards, calling the winery “Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde” as a tribute to the ancient chapel dedicated to Santa Maria Valverde overlooking the estate.
With attention and sincere devotion to the cultivation of these peculiar hillside vineyards, he undertakes a meticulous selection of the grapes, coming from the traditional grape varieties Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara Oseletta, grown for the excellence of their yield, on terraces exposed to south on a clayey soil rich in chalk. The density of the plants is 5200 plants per hectare.

Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde is a completely self-sufficient winery that controls every aspect of its winemaking process. When the harvest is complete, only the best grapes are selected and set aside for drying and subsequently transformed into a sensational Amarone, a wine that has made Valpolicella famous among wine enthusiasts and producers around the world.

The withering

A grape drying technique unchanged since Roman times

The drying of the grapes for Amarone takes place in a natural stone chamber, present in the cellar. This dependence on the natural conditions of the places, meteorological-atmospheric conditions and the altitude of the area, are of primary importance in giving a wine an identity that can be characteristic year after year.

The wines and

the concept of "cru"

In our production the vocation of each plot of land is respected.

Tenuta Santa MariaValverde produces Valpolicella Classico and Superiore, Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso, Savinè Cabernet Sauvignon, Recioto and, of course, Amarone.
Aging takes place in French oak barrels, the so-called "tonneaux".
All the bottles are individually numbered to guarantee the traceability of the vineyard and the product for the hygienic-sanitary guarantee of the wines and the exclusivity of the product.
Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde produces 10,000 bottles a year following a project of parcelling out the vineyards, this means, winemaking the individual grape varieties in small batches. The goal is to produce red wines deeply anchored to the territory and a unique and unrepeatable Amarone of excellence for each vintage.
Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde project declines the French concept of “cru”: every single plot of land is suited year after year to produce a typical and characteristic wine that only that parcelization can produce.
The French concept of “terroir”, applied to Alta Valpolicella's soils  , has given four results of soils: calcareous-clayey, effusive tuff, decaying lavas and silt. These "terroirs" give to the grown  varieties, typical characters that recall hints of red fruit, cherry in  (typical scent of Amarone di Marano), and of the red berry, as a marker blackberry in particular . These results were achieved through soil analysis research and sensory analysis of produced wines .
